September 25, 1974 is an unforgettable day for Bangladesh and Bengali language. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman delivered his first address as the Head of State of Bangladesh at the 29th General Assembly of the United Nations. Just 7 days before that, Bangladesh was unanimously included in the General Assembly on 16 September 1974 as the 137th country of the United Nations. Father of the Nation Bangabandhu was the first statesman to speak at the United Nations in his mother tongue Bengali and to hold the Bengali language in a position of dignity in the World Assembly. On that day, the president of the general session requested Bangabandhu to speak in English. Bangabandhu said politely, "Honorable President, I want to speak in my mother tongue Bengali." There are six official languages of the United Nations, none of which are Bengali. At the request of Bangabandhu, the President of the session allowed the Father of the Nation to speak in Bengal. Today is the historic 25th of September. A glorious day in the history of the Bengali nation and the Bengali language.
